Hi Guest

It has been an action-packed month at the Hub full of inspiring talks, impressive talent and exciting collaborations taking shape.

We were thrilled to welcome the team as new members of the Hub. Founded by Peregian Beach local and repeat entrepreneur, Raeleen Kaesehagen, is an online community of classes, workshops and activities for women, men and children of all ages and interests. Learn more about Raeleen and mudputty below in our new segment Lightbulb Moments.

Starting in July, we're launching a series of exciting talent development programs aimed at enabling girls to pursue their interests in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, maths). These programs will draw on our growing network of world class female mentors like Raeleen who inspire and support these young talents. More below.

The Hub has invested in a cutting edge live-streaming system that allows us to capture and share the amazing content coming out of the meetups and events happening in the Co-Lab. In the last month alone we've learnt from an Astrophysicist, the founder of Australia's leading rocket company, a global expert in computer vision for robotics and the founder of Queensland's most renowned digital agency, just to mention a few.

There is more to come in July - the Screen meetup features Ken Crouch of Screenworks, the organisation that has helped the Northern Rivers area of NSW become a film powerhouse. More below.

I'm particularly looking forward to hosting a HubLunch with another world-renowned figure - the man who predicted Trump, Brexit and ScoMo, the big data expert, Professor Bela Stantic. More on this below.

My favourite moment this month was seeing the full Atmail team of 30plus employees come together from various corners of the earth to little Peregian Beach for their annual sales conference this week. Atmail remains the shining example of creating high-value employment opportunities in Noosa through digital innovation. What Founder Ben Duncan and more recently Dave Richards, Glen Lynden and the team at Atmail have achieved, is simply phenomenal and we're proud to have them at the Hub.

I hope those of you taking time off during the July holidays have a restful break.

Kind Regards,

Chris Boden

As we move into term 3 and 4, we have an action-packed calendar with exciting programs designed specifically for girls.

Project Athena

The Hub has partnered with 3 of our local state high schools, Sunshine Beach, Noosa District and Coolum to create a unique program that helps grow the number of girls participating in STEM fields.

Through terms 3 and 4, Project Athena will see 10 girls from each of these schools in grades 8-10 come to the Hub for 3 days of inspiring workshops and mentoring led by world class female STEM practitioners. Workshops will cover advanced topics like DNA extraction, machine learning, wearable technology and software development. These STEM students will also go on excursions with high tech companies like Boeing and collaborate on entrepreneurial STEM projects of their own with ongoing support from mentors.

Flying Inventor Program for Girls

Drones are powerful flying robots. Learning how they work and how to fly them, we believe, is a great way to give students exposure to important engineering and computer science concepts and encourage them to pursue these pathways. For term 3, the Hub has partnered with the Noosa Library service to offer a Flying Inventor program program exclusively for 20 girls from of our local schools in grades 9 or 10. The 6 day program will see ten teams of two girls learning to build, fly and race FPV (first person view) drones for prizes.

After-school Robotics & Engineering Club for Girls

Starting in term 3 we're introducing an after-school club for girls on Mondays from 4-6pm. Taught by Australia's champion senior girls robotics team, this fun engineering and robotics workshop will teach the essentials of building, programming and competing with the Mindstorms robotics platform with a wide array of projects.

The Hub is excited to be hosting Professor Bela Stantic for a HubLunch on the 22nd of July. Bela is the acclaimed big data scientist who humbled the professional pollsters by correctly predicting the Trump election, the Brexit referendum result, the recent Coalition win and other high profile decisions.

Bela is Professor of Computer Science and Head of School of ICT at Griffith University as well as founder and Director of their “Big Data and Smart Analytics” Lab. He is internationally recognised in the field of data analytics and applying Big Data analytics in the tourism, environment and health domains, having published over 130 peer reviewed journal publications.

This HubLunch event will feature a fireside chat with Prof Stantic, hosted by locally-based technology executive Kirsty Telburn, Head of Deep Learning & Personalisation at Telstra Digital.

The HubLunch series of events invites world class technologists, authors, thinkers and researchers to come to Noosa and share their insights about the future with the key leaders and influencers in our community. Previous events have featured technologist and investor, Steve Baxter and MIT Professor and author, Andy McAfee.

There is an exciting schedule of monthly events happening at the Hub each month which bring together members of various digital industry groups to network, share ideas, and hear inspirational talks from top notch presenters.

Are You A Coder or Technologist?

Coding From Beach is the leading industry group for technologists on the Sunshine Coast. The group has around 490 members and meets at the Hub on the first Thursday of every month.

June's meetup featured space technology with 85 people coming out on a chilly Thursday evening to hear from some of Australia's top space technologists. Four amazing talks from actual rocket scientists, asteroid miners and satellite agronomists. Watch the live-stream recording, here.

The next Coding from Beach meetup takes place on Thursday 6th of June 2019 from 6-8pm at the Hub and will kick off Maker Month.

Bring your maker projects to show and tell with other makers and hear from a panel of Aussie makers who recently attended the very last Maker Faire Bay Area in Silicon Valley, visited makerspaces, labs and more, and met with the founders and key people from influential brands such as Autodesk, Prusa, Arduino and Kickstarter. Join the Coding from Beach group here.

Are You A Digital Marketer, Agency or Creative?

REBOOT is a new industry group created to support the Digital Creative and Marketing Industry in the Noosa Region. REBOOT aims to grow the profile of the sector and attract opportunities for local service providers.

The June REBOOT Meetup saw 65 of our local digital creatives and marketers come together to enjoy inspirational talks from 3 fantastic speakers.

Karina Sharpe talked us through the importance of product imagery in digital marketing and how she takes a sensory approach to creating incredible product visuals for startups and major corporates.

Darren Clark showed why he is in demand as a business coach to billion dollar companies by sharing his approach to working with leaders to amplify their strengths and solve for their weaknesses.

Ben Johnston closed with a fantastic talk about the journey of Josephmark, his world-renowned digital agency and how he has evolved it into a venture studio spinning out exciting startup projects which leverage the talent of the JM studio and their years of experience and international network.

REBOOT Meetups are curated to inspire and up-skill digital agencies and those creative professionals who provide digital marketing services to clients. Meetups take place on the second Tuesday of every month. Join here.

Are You A Digital Storyteller?

The Sunshine Coast Screen Collective is an industry group for the many talented visual storytelling creatives living on the Sunshine Coast who are involved in film, tv, video, photography or related services. The purpose of the meetup is to organise, inspire and up-skill the screen industry on the Coast to grow the profile of the sector and attract opportunities for local creatives.

At the next Screen meetup on Monday 1st July, we will learn from Ken Crouch, CEO of Screenworks, how the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales has established a thriving film industry and how the Sunshine Coast could follow in their footsteps.

Ken will focus on the screen-related development and networking opportunities that Screenworks provides. The floor will then open up for a Q&A session so that attendees can engage directly with him, as well as with Screen Queensland VP of Content Samantha Laidlaw.

Make sure you don't miss this one. Join here.

It was fantastic to have Peter Corke, Distinguished Professor of Robotics at QUT at the Hub last week, as part of the Intro to AI series that we're co-curating with the Noosa Chamber of Commerce.

If you missed Peter's fascinating talk on robotics, autonomy and computer visions, fear not because it was live-streamed from our Co-Lab and you can watch the recording at your leisure. This includes the insightful panel featuring local technologist Andy Fitzsimon of RedHat and Data Scientist, Dr Ruth Luscombe.

Keep an eye out for the 3rd edition of the Intro to AI series.

Burning Platform

Each Hub newsletter will use this slot to remind ourselves that CO2 levels in the atmosphere is the burning platform. The latest reading (June 20) is 414.06 ppm. According to the science, 450 ppm is a point of no return when we lock in warming of more than 2`C and the planet becomes uninhabitable. At the current rate, that happens in the late 2030's.
